We weren't taught history highlights the absence of history in the official Nigerian secondary school curriculum. History was officially removed from the curriculum by the government in 2007, and it took around 2 years for this to be fully implemented nationwide. However, my results show its absence as early as 2005. In 2022 the government ruled that history should be introduced to the junior secondary education curriculum.
This work is also an exploration of my personal history. I combine elements of my life with paintings as an act of compassion for myself and my audience. The paintings preserve contemporary cultural memory.
