Baller (2024)

Themes: Social Pressure, Beauty as Invisible Labour, Cultural Structure, Women's Participation in Sports for Recreation

More information: This is the second in an ongoing series of paintings called "Girls just want to have fun". The series sets out to explore the ways that invisible labour and beauty standards keep women from enjoying themselves. Recreational and leisure activities are chosen by an individual to improve their life. These activities are constructive, healthy, and can be physically, mentally, and socially beneficial.
Women's participation in recreational activities can be limited by a variety of factors, including:
Gender roles, Family pressure:
Women are often expected to take on traditional female roles, such as domestic chores, rather than participating in sports.
Cultural structure, Social pressure:
The cultural structure of society, as well as society's perspective on women, can affect their participation in leisure activities. This includes beauty standards and desirability politics that encourage women to prioritize looking good over feeling good.
