Artist statement

I am a feminist folk artist, and a Yoruba woman. I work in both traditional and digital mediums, choosing to use simple tools and meditative processes. By intuitively experimenting with materials that are social, functional, and symbolic, I create art that is simultaneously personal and public. I am most fond of subjects that have collective histories, including community traditions and canon events. My people-centered approach to research makes most of my work figurative. Using unrealism, I challenge normalized oppressions as aspects of culture, inviting the audience to reimagine reality, thus strengthening the participatory construction of a culture that is authentically ours.
Currently, I am exploring women's invisible labor with mixed media and Nigerian cultural memory with printmaking.
