Artist's statement

Culture defines me. It shapes who I am and how I interact with the world, influencing my values, norms and the way I understand myself and others. My cultural identity is a significant influence in the creation and reception of my creative output, influencing my choice of subject matter, style, techniques and materials employed, as well as serving as a powerful medium and tool in prompting interpretation, understanding and conversation. My art explores cultural memory through folklore, folktales, folk art, myths and legends, capturing the evolution of the cultural imagination, and highlighting the value of the surrealism of traditions. To deepen understanding of my cultural identity, I examine the collective and personal histories behind community traditions and canon events. By intuitively experimenting with the social, functional, and symbolic, I visualize stories that are simultaneously personal and collective. Playfully combining societal trends and self-expression with history and tradition, I weave narratives that challenge normalized oppressions as aspects of culture, and invite my audience to reimagine futures, strengthening the participatory construction of an equitable and evolved contemporary culture. Recently, I explored Nigerian women's invisible labour with mixed media, illustration and design. I am currently exploring collective memory with printmaking.
