Artist's statement

Culture defines me. It shapes who I am and how I interact with the world, influencing my values, norms and the way I understand myself and others. My cultural identity is a significant influence in the creation and reception of my creative output, influencing my choice of subject matter, style, techniques and materials employed, as well as serving as a powerful medium and tool in prompting interpretation, understanding and conversation. To deepen understanding of my cultural identity, I examine the collective and personal histories behind contemporary community traditions and canon events. My art blends autobiographical and shared lived experiences with the surrealism of everyday occurrences, playfully combining societal trends and self-expression. By intuitively experimenting with the social, functional, and symbolic, I create art that is simultaneously personal and public. By challenging normalized oppressions as aspects of culture, I invite my audience to reimagine futures, and strengthen the participatory construction of culture. My objectives are to stir political debate and raise awareness about social issues; inspiring social change, and to capture the beauty of the human condition and natural environment through various mediums and methods; including illustration and design.
Recently, I explored women's invisible labour with mixed media. I am currently exploring collective memory with printmaking.
